Teenage Dogs

When your lovely little puppy grows into a teenager, life can feel very different. Behaviours change. Listening becomes harder. Walks can feel more stressful. Many guardians describe this stage as confusing and wonder what happened to the puppy they once knew.

Why this stage can feel so hard

Teenage dogs can be a real mix of sweet moments and sudden chaos. Guardians often say they do not recognise their dog anymore. Many describe it as a complete surprise.

Some common experiences include:

A dog who once listened well has suddenly forgotten they have ears

Behaviours appear that were never seen before

Energy levels rise and feel harder to manage

Walks become less predictable

Simple cues become harder for your dog to follow

This stage is one of the most misunderstood. Teenage dogs are sadly the most commonly re-homed because guardians feel overwhelmed and struggle to cope.

Your dog is not giving you a hard time, they are having a hard time. They are going through a normal and important part of growing up, something we can absolutely help them with.

How training helps your teenage dog

You do not have to handle this stage alone. With the right support, the teenage phase becomes easier to understand and far less stressful. My approach keeps things simple and focuses on helping you and your dog feel more connected. In our sessions, we will:

Understand why your dog’s behaviour has changed

Build calm routines that reduce overwhelm

Strengthen those skills that they once knew so well

Support emotional and breed specific needs

Practise simple games that give your dog healthy outlets

Create a training plan you can follow even on busy days

I guide you through the behaviours you are seeing, explain why they happen and help you respond in a way that supports your dog instead of adding frustration for you both.
